  • Aarikka finnish wood...

AARIKKA (FINLAND) Aarikka Oy is a Finnish family business established in 1954 to mastermind and manufacture design products. Each item in the Aarikka collection is a unique item handmade in Finland from Finnish materials. The wood is Finnish birch that, thanks to Aarikka´s own dyeing method, acquires a beautiful, translucent sheen. The Aarikka animals range represents lasting beauty with a form language and quality that last from year to year. Manufacture : The Key Flag symbol indicates that our products are Finnish. Very many of them are assembled either at home or at centres providing jobs for the disabled. Social employment creation has been part of our mission since the 1970s. Assembling the products locally means we can keep the transport distances short. This is one factor contributing to the ecology of our products; others are the avoidance of unnecessary packaging and the promotion of eco-friendly raw materials such as wood.

  • Bengt & Lotta
The Bengt & Lotta brand was born of a couple of Swedish designers who met at Stockholm's College of Arts, Craft and Design.
After their studies they started a life of employees, one in a national newspaper and the other in advertising agency.
It was Bengt who got bored first and started producing candle holders in ironwork and placing them in Swedish shops. His stylized animals, a momentum in particular, have been a huge success and requests came from Germany, Japan, USA ...
Klippan uses their talent to create some of his models of blankets, cushions, and home accessories. For their part, Bengt & Lotta preferred to relinquish the commercial and marketing aspect of their business by entrusting the marketing of their brand to Klippan. Little by little, Bengt & Lotta's designs were extended to a larger number of products: candle holders, wooden trays, kitchen accessories ...

  • Grannas A. Olssons...

GRANNAS OLSSON WOOD DALA HORSES Today, Nusnäs is the centre of Dala horse production with the most famous being the Nils Olsson and Grannas Olsson workshops. Grannas A. Olssons Hemslöjd AB, founded in 1922, is the oldest company which still makes Dalecarlian horses. Nils Olssons Hemslöjd is almost as old. The horses made at these workshops share the same familiar pattern which most people associate to Dala horses. Apart from these, old-style horses are also hand-carved and painted in limited editions to replicate the style of the antique horses found in Swedish museums or held in private family collections. These are numbered and signed, so that they cannot be confused with an original early Dala horse. The wood from which the figures are carved comes from the slow-growing pine forests around Lake Siljan. The wood is ideal for carpentry and carving. The trees to be made into horses are marked out while still standing in the forest. Only the best timber will be selected for carving into horses. The trees are felled and sawed into pieces of a suitable size for the blanks that will eventually be made into Dalecarlian horses. The blanks are sawed and carved by hand. Because of this, no two horses are exactly alike. The horses are dipped in primer immediately after carving, to reveal any defects in the wood that may need to be fixed. After priming, any cavities in the wood are filled in to ensure extra smoothness. The horses are polished to give them a smooth, attractive finish. After sanding, the horses are dipped into paint of the appropriate colour. The traditional pattern is painted free-hand by practised "ripple" painters. The art of rippling requires great skill and takes many years to learn. Finally, "all the fine horses" are varnished and sent out from Nusnäs to serve as a symbol of Sweden in the outside world.
