Did you know that the Dala horse is the symbol most often brought back from Sweden due to its strong emblematic value? Don't hesitate to treat yourself or your loved ones to one.
Written records describing the Swedish Dala horse have been found in a sermon around 1624. For long periods of time, men who worked alone in the forests spent their evenings carving wooden toys for children. They used the scraps of wood to carve little horses that greatly helped with farm work and transportation. They painted them red because it was the only color available at the time. They used copper from the Falun mine (a mining town). They painted harnesses and saddles with floral motifs called "kurbits," small leaves from lucky shrubs. The tradition continued, and the Dala horses were carved by villagers who, during the long, harsh Swedish winters, could no longer work outside on farms. The Dala horse achieved international fame at the 1939 New York Exposition thanks to Mr. Grannas Olson and his 3-meter Dala horse at the entrance to the Swedish pavilion. The Dala horse is now a fully-fledged Swedish craft.
